Smart Cards were first invented in the 1970’s with broad adoption due to the EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) standard in 1994. As a result of biometrics and other encryption standards being adopted, Smart cards have become ubiquitous around the world used for everything from banking, ID cards, electronic passports and physical access. Over the last 20 years, smart card innovation has stalled as access controls for digital information & infrastructure have become increasingly important within cyber security.
